Get Ready for the Back-to-School Season

School. It’s coming around the corner, and I am ready to conquerrrrr!

It’s dreadful to think that school is approaching, but think on the bright side, you can see all your friends again, participate in clubs and sports and whatever else you enjoy 🙂

Here are some ways to make your preparation for school a little easier

 1. Know where your classes areFlamingos roaming

Isn’t it just awful roaming around campus trying to find your class before the actual class?! Save the hassle and stress and know the location 🙂 It makes life a little better!

Kick it back to the good old Back-to-School shopping days and get the shopaholic inside of you OUT! I love B2S shopping.

Using a lap top?Get in loser, were going shopping

Make sure you have pens, pencils and paper on hand for courses that require you to draw/sketch and for exams with scantron.

No lap top?

Binders, notebooks and supplies are always helpful!

3. Know your transportation

If you aren’t living on campus, know what type of transportation you will be taking. Going into university, I have never used transit to go to school because I lived so close to my high school and elementary school.

If you are  first year and this is your first time using this route, such as myself last year, I suggest taking that bus/train/car ride to campus so you know how it works.

I take the train and I didn’t know where it would stop and how I would get to campus. Turns out, there is a complimentary shuttle that takes me to campus, since the station is down the street.

4. Have an empty memory stick on hand

It’s always nice to have one on you 🙂

5. Be a Goal Setter

Before you start the school year, make some goals for yourself on what you want to achieve during the year. Have this list in a visible spot so you will always be reminded on what you want to accomplish 🙂

What to do the night before

 1. Set your alarmalarm cry

I know, it’s dreadful. Waking up early for school (if you have morning classes) when all summer long you have been sleeping in and relaxing.

And if you don’t have early classes and you can sleep in as much as you want, well… lucky you! You have been blessed with a wonderful schedule and beautiful sleep. I envy your life.

I cant be late

I wish all the best for your first week of school and if you are a first year, don’t worry! University is a great and special time where you experience new things, learn more relevant information and is a time where you find yourself (I sound so philosophical hehe). Anyways, you’re going to have a great time so cherish every moment! And if you are attending O-Week, HAVEEEE FUN!

See you all next week!

Look Mom, I’m Learning!

Party hardHey everyone!

Hope your weekend was great and way better than mine! Feeling a little bit sick but my exam for my summer course is finally over!

In today’s segment, our team will be discussing what we learned in our position. I increased my ability to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, learned how to use and some tricks on WordPress (which was my goal stated in my first post) and I learned more about York University.

Adobe Photoshop

1. The Magic Eraser tool

It’s literally like mScreen Shot 2014-08-13 at 11.52.05 AMagic…I remember I used to make the mistake of using the basic eraser tool and precisely erasing around objects for a long time. With this tool, at a click of a button you can eraser the background like this one below. Select the tool, hover over any part of the area you want gone, click and BAM, background gone! I got rid of the white background, showing this checked pattern which is a transparent background.

Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 11.53.48 AM

When you save the picture, there will be no white background to it! Just the circular figure.

Tip: If you want a transparent background, make sure you save the picture as a PNG

Adobe Illustrator

This summer was my first time using Illustrator. I have been watching a lot of tutorials, trying to figure out some tricks and just basic ways on how to use Illustrator. I found this really good website that had very helpful and easy tutorials.

Want to learn more about Illustrator? Check the site HERE.

This blog was the first time I used WordPress and I am absolutely loving it! It’s easy, and super fun to write information about. I actually started another one for a more personal reason with a close friend.

1. The beautiful Toolbar ToggleScreen Shot 2014-08-13 at 10.17.26 PM

This tool exposed me to many other options to use for blogging such as change of font size&colour, indenting and underlining!

1. YFS Coverage

The YFS provides coverage to their students that includes services such as dental care, eye care, massages, and orthotic care.

For information on all the benefits available, check the YFS site HERE.

2. Career Centre

I learned about the services available at the Career Centre, a very important department that you should check out. They do such tthings as assist you in finding a job, help you update your resume and will even assist you after 2 years of graduation!

You definitely want to check this page out HERE!

 3. Cheap options for Food

I think this should have its own blog post by itself. University is expensive and we need to do our best to save those extra dollas.

a) Blumont Bistro – $5 lunch special (any wrap of your choice)

My Body is Readyb) Treats – $3.50-5 breakfast special (breakfast bagel sandwich with or without coffee)

c) Orange Snail – big portions for an amazing price! and the couple who owns & runs the place are the cutest

d) Wendy’s – I always turn to the $2 crispy chicken snack wrap

Well that is all for now ladies and gents! In honour of the passing of Robin Williams, an inspirational actor who played a large role in my childhood, I salute you all with this gif.

Steps to becoming a YorkU Study Ninja

I know what’s going through your head now……

Anyways, this week our team will be discussing how to manage your time and how to deal with stress. Honestly, I find that one of the major ways to succeed in university is to prioritize your time and manage your stress level. You aren’t as productive if you put way too much pressure on yourself.

So young grasshopper, allow me to bless you with my knowledge. Follow these steps to have a more exciting, stress-free and productive university experience!

During my first year, I tested out different methods on studying and honestly, cramming all the information was not the best way to go 😦 the struggle was so real. You can’t obtain the information properly and you really don’t understand the information as well if you don’t take your time. This method I did for my last exam was perfect (so unfortunate I figured that out for my last exam ugh).

1. Make a study group

Everyone usually has a unit or concept that they understand more. Interacting with a group can give you the opportunity to be taught a chapter you might not know as well. I don’t know about you but I memorize concepts better when someone explains it to me and then they quiz me, making me explain the concept back to them. IT’S LIKE MAGIC WHATTT!?

This is insanely brilliant

2. Take breaks

To make your studying more efficient, always remember to take a break! It is suggested to take a 10 minute break every hour. Go for a quick walk, play a game on your phone, or get some food! HMMM FOOOD. Just anything other than  your notes and textbook! tumblr_inline_n711fc2lZ41rnvwt1

Don’t restrain yourself from the beautiful heavenly sleep. Your bed needs you. Never, ever, ever do an all nighter! It does absolutely no good to you and just drains you out. Minimum, at very least get 6 hours of sleep to retain that information but aim for 8-10 hours of sleep! So let your inner sleeping beauty come out and enjoy 🙂

yes, I know what you are thinking, silly Vanessa, that’s Ariel -_- there was no cool Sleeping Beauty gifs. I’m sorry to disappoint

4. Make a cheat sheet

Personally, I love making cheat sheets. It’s literally a sheet of everything important in the lecture. So when it comes to studying for the exam, I have about 4 sheets of paper that covers all the important information in every lecture. Literally the course at the palm of my hands.

(I honestly don’t know what they are saying…)

5. Make a schedule

Just a better way to stay organized! You stay organized = less stress on you! Keep track of what chapters you are going to cover each day and remember to make notes. YAY

And since we are on the topic of schedules…

6. Always leave some time for YOU and OTHERS

Don’t forget about the important people around you and for that one special someone! Obviously yourself 😉 … Always leave space in your schedule for leisure time. Go to the movies, hang out with friends, play a sport, read a book, whatever you enjoy to do in your spare time, do it like Nike and JUST DO IT! A healthier mind is one that is relaxed and not always concentrated on work 🙂 Just enjoy your life!

Now run along and conquer the world! Tell me how it goes if you followed these tips! …Because, ya know…

Thanks for reading and looking forward to sharing more next week!

The YorkU Photoshoot

Hey y’all! Hope all is well 🙂 In this week’s segment, my team will be showing off some of their favourite photography or selfies at YorkU!

When I finally got my Canon Rebel t4i, I started getting into a lot of nature photography. I like to carry my camera everywhere I go in case I have the opportunity to take a really nice shot. At YorkU, I personally take a lot of fun pictures of people as well as some photos of campus. Check it out! 🙂

So for April Fool’s Day, I decided to newspaper the whole New College Council office. All the furniture and items, the floor and ceiling were covered in newspaper. Sorry trees 😦 It took about 5 of us to cover it in about 2-3 hours. Took a nice shoot in it. It was totally worth it!

Art work in the New College office. Painting done by Jack Onorati (who is now the President of New College Council!)

hahah my friends and I did a shoot for our New College elections. When I found this picture, I had to photoshop it. Enjoy 🙂

Speaking of New College (yes, I may be bias since it’s my college), check out our O-Week team. These amazing individuals will be planning the best week of our life: ORIENTATION WEEK!

Happy Canada Deh! (see what I did there hehe)

Happy Canada Day y’all! (yes I may be a tad late).Did you also know it was New College’s 5th birthday too!

If you don’t know what New College is, well… we can’t be friends 🙂 It is the college I belong to at York! New College consists of the business students, Pond residence and is the college with the most international students!

Anyways, I spent Canada Day at home, hanging with some of my friends, cleaning (because I absolutely love doing that!) and then watched some fireworks at a park near my house!

I absolutely love this country! During my first year at York, I met a lot of international students and we shared the experience  we had in our home country (mine being Canada). Comparing our experiences really showed me and helped me appreciate my country. Canada is a very liberal country and offers many rights and freedoms to their citizens which I have unappreciated before. I have been expose to so much this year that I learned what it really means to be a Canadian!

Check out these fireworks that were displayed near my house! BAM

(all photos taken by moi on my Canon Rebel t4i! If you don’t like them, well….I didn’t take them)

Hope you all had a great Canada Day!

See you next week 🙂

Gifs, gifs and more gifs!

Welcome to my blog

In today’s segment, we will be discussing what our favourite social media platform is. For me, this was tough because I am obsessed with social media and have every popular social media platform possible and just love all of them! Yes, I have a slight problem…

But anyways, my favourite platform is…..

WOOOAHHH! I absolutely love tumblr! It is my go-to site when I am lying in my bed at night and just can’t sleep or you know, just down right bored. I love scrolling through the dashboard and looking at funny gifs and food pics. AWWWWW the food on tumblr is mouthwatering.

Sweet Niblets :’)

My favourite part of tumblr is the gifs! I always save them on my phone and use them in my conversations with my friends. They’re funny and really show how you are feeling in the situation. So today, I will be sharing with you some of my favourite gifs! Get ready….

Meet Team Awesome a.k.a. Leadership Crew

Welcome back! I have been waiting… Welcome

…I’m kidding.

aint nobody got time for that

This is my first job at York and I am super excited working at SCLD! It’s absolutely fantastic! My media & communication team is awesome and the people at SCLD are so welcoming and full of energy!

On Wednesdays, we wear plaid.

As a Media & Communications Ambassador, we are a liaison with each department in SCLD. I have been privileged with the opportunity to work with the LEADERSHIP DEPARTMENT and Saba, my partner in crime!

As their liaison, if they have any projects regarding media and promotion (posters, videos, banners, etc.) that need to be completed, I am the one they contact and off I go creating the most extravagant advertisement you can imagine!!

This is insanely brilliant

Check out my team!

Saba Rafiq – Student Leadership and Development Coordinator

Katherine Fowley – Student Leadership Assistant

Marina Janakovic – Student Leadership Assistant

I am thrilled and looking forward to be working on Lion’s Pride and LeaderShape with these cool cats! The Leadership department at SCLD will take over York..and then…THE WORLD! MUAHAHA

Let’s Get Active

SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE! excitedbaby excited

…well if you are fortunate enough to not take any summer courses.

not this…

Follow these steps to get ready for beach weather

1. Just Say No!

When someone offers you junk food, turn your head to the left and then turn your head to the right. Repeat step five times without stopping, or until you scare them off 🙂  I just saved your food baby. You’re welcome 😉

shake it

There are so many ways you can get involved with a sports team.

– Join Intramural sports at York

– Join a sports league in your home town

– Scrimmage with some friends

This summer, I joined intramural sports teams at York, playing for New College. I am on both the softball and soccer team. It’s a great way to not only stay active, but get involved with your college and meeting a lot new, amazing people!

WOOOOOOW look at that good looking bunch

3. Activities

If sports is not your thing, there are so many other ways to stay in shape! You can join a local gym, a Zumba class, a dance class, a running club! The opportunities are endless! Just always remember to stretch and stay hydrated!

4.  Horizontal running.

…nuff said

Now go out and conquer the world with your beach bod!

Choosing Fall Courses

It is that time of year again! Where all students fight for the finish to get the perfect course time!

one does not simply enrol in classes

First things first, I would highly suggest figuring out when your enrolment time is! You can find this on the Registrar’s  Website.

Registrar's Website

As you can see from the other options present, this is also where you can add/courses for the Fall/Winter 2014 terms.

Picking courses for my first year, I had no one helping me and let’s just say, I had one of the worst schedules. 8:30 a.m. and night classes, 5 hours breaks and don’t forget, I had to commute this back and forth from Newmarket. Just awful.

1st year schedule

Check that beauty out.

Listen friends,  please don’t make the same mistake I did 😦

1. 8:30 a.m. classes.

My mentality when choosing the dreadful 8:30 class was that I could go to class just to get it out of the way. I was wrong; I learned that it was best for me to go straight to the library once I arrived on campus at 8:30 a.m. Your brain is fresh and works best in the morning. After a 4 hour sesh in the library with all my Tim Hortons donuts and timbits (TIMMY TUESDAYSS!), I would head over to Atkinson and just relax/ do some council work. You always need a balance of social and academics and I always suggest doing the academics first.

2. Morning bird or Night rider?

Know what type of person you are. If you like getting things done in the morning, book some morning courses. However, if you work well at night and think you can obtain information at 9 o’clock at night, book a 7-10 p.m. course. You can find some really good professors at this time as majority of them work during the day (in a profession that typically suits the course) and teaches at night, especially for ADMS courses.

3. Commuter or Residence?

If you are commuting to York, always keep in mind how far away you are from your campus and how long the commute will be. Try to leave yourself with a weekday without class so you commute one less day 🙂

If you are living on residence/the village/live really close to campus, well you are one lucky duck and you can make whatever schedule – Wake up early, have night class, you can do whatever your heart desires as it may be just a 5 minute walk to class. I envy your life 😦

4. Degree Progress Report

This is your bible to succeed in school. Read it, memorize it, breath it, do whatever it takes to acknowledge the precious information in it.

Make sure you know what your required courses are for your major. I have some friends who took all these interesting courses in first year and did very well in them but in the end they didn’t count towards their degree. When picking courses, always ensure you take your mandatories first and if you have space and time, take a fun elective (while ensuring they count towards your credits) 🙂

Find yours here.

That’s all for now! GOOD LUCK and…

May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favour

**If you need any more assistance on how to enrol in your courses, check out this link on the York website here!

Hellloooo YU Lions and Welcome

Hi everyone!

Source: here

Hear ye hear ye, my very first post on my first blog! WOOOO HOOOO

First year is finally over and wow what a year it has been. 30 credit course load, Student Council, sports and endless amounts of Thai Express (yes, I have a slight obsession with T.E. Please help me)

I am currently a second year student, majoring in Administrative Studies, Honours Marketing and affiliated with New College. I recently was hired at SCLD (Student Community & Leadership Development) as one of the Media and Communication Ambassadors. I am here to share my experience and lessons I have learned so far in my journey at York, as well as updating you on the latest social media platform tricks and tips. For more about myself, check out my About Page!

Now young grasshopper, I am here to help you on your journey to university. Many students take the transition from high school to university easily and some have a harder time. But you know what, THAT’S OKAY! We are here to help.

We’re like Team Justice League. Here to save the day. Anyways, enough superhero references.

1. Attend Orientation Week

As others know it as FROSH WEEK. I cannot stress this anymore. Honestly, orientation week was probably the best week of the whole year. I got to meet all the other first years in my college, was educated on what my college had to offer, and just HAD FUN!

2. Get to Know your College

York has 9 colleges based on what your major is. I found it really helpful figuring out what my college is during the summer so that I can buy that specific college’s frosh kit (for Orientation Week, the kit is your ticket to attend the events. And you get awesome college swag!)

3. Get Involved with your College and York Community

York and your college have so many opportunities to get involved that suit your interests. Personally, I was more involved with my college than York wide events. Student Council is a big part of my life so that’s when I decided I would run in the New College elections. I also love sports so I joined the New College intramural team. Your college council will always update you on new events/activities/sports occurring so getting in contact with them through their social media platforms will be helpful! 🙂

Honestly, this is my first time using WordPress. My main goal for this year is to understand how to use WordPress more and figuring out the small cool details you can do with this website; to explore new aspects and use my creativity to make one awesome helpful blog to all you readers.

Well, that’s all for now.
